If you’re thinking about writing a novel, or you’re already in the process of writing a novel, do you understand the 8 key elements of any great novel?
You should.
If not, you won’t be able to write a good novel, much less a great one.
Here are the 8 key elements to include in your novel:
1. Compelling Characters
Create characters readers will identify with and care about.
2. Overall Story Problem
Without an overall story problem you’ll probably end up with a just a series of “incidents” – and agents and editors don’t buy incidents, they buy full-fledged stories.
3. Dramatic Tension
This is the fuel that fires your story and keeps readers turning the pages.
Make things get worse and worse for your main character, so readers wonder if he’ll ever be able to solve the overall story problem.
4. Turning Points
Things have to change for your main characters throughout the story to keep it interesting and to move the action forward.
5. Vivid Sensory Details
Appeal to all 5 senses as vividly as you can throughout your story and readers will feel as if they are experiencing the action right along with your characters instead of merely reading about it.
6. Engaging and Cohesive Subplots
These are stories within your story that make your novel more rich and interesting.
7. Effective Climax
This is the most exciting part of your story, and the ultimate turning point, where something happens that changes everything so the main character(s) is able to finally solve or resolve the main story problem.
8. Satisfying Resolution
This ties up all the subplots and loose ends so that everything in your story comes together in a way that satisfies your reader.
To give yourself the best chance of writing a great novel, be sure you include each of these key elements in your story.
