Here are some creative writing prompts from Gladys Swedak to help you get a little writing practice this month.
1. The ten year old boy stood on a chair in the doctor’s office. He held his pants just above his bum. He was paying attention to the document on the wall, trying not to think about the needle the doctor was fixing. What does the document say about the doctor? What injection is the doctor going to give the boy and why?
2. Halloween was a few nights ago. You took your child trick or treating. What did s/he get and how are you going to let him/her have it? What do you find in the bag as you take out the candy?
3. American Thanksgiving is coming this month. I, as a Canadian, wish you all well. But there is a problem. You just moved into a one bedroom apartment and you are suppose to provide Thanksgiving dinner for your family and friends. No problem, right? But there is. Your stove doesn’t work right. How are you going to cook Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and provide the Thanksgiving worth remembering?
4. You have Thanksgiving dinner, which consists of an enormous turkey and all the trimmings, prepared and your guests are starting to arrive. One of them announces, “Oh, did I forget to tell you I’m allergic to turkey?”
5. Winter is fast approaching. Do you like the idea of spending the winter where you are, and will it be warm or cold? Will you go somewhere warm or stay where you are?
6. You are planning a big Thanksgiving dinner. Who are you expecting, why are they coming and how will the day progress?
7. Your friend who owns a farm has invited you to come and pick your own turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. When you get there, you find out the turkey is still alive and you will have to do what is necessary to cook it for dinner. Do you do what has to be done, or do you not have turkey for Thanksgiving dinner?
8. You are just about to sit down to a family Thanksgiving dinner when there is a knock at the door. Who is there and what happens?
9. You are the doctor with a patient and you receive a phone call from the daycare where your child is. What is the call about and how do you handle it? What do you do about your patients?
10. Thanksgiving is approaching and you are on your own. How do you celebrate or do you? If you don’t, why not? If you do, how do you celebrate?

Gladys Swedak is a senior living in Vancouver with her husband and two cats. She started writing a number of years ago after telling her husband she had a story for a prompt in a biweekly paper. He told her there is a computer downstairs and to go and write it. She didn’t win the contest but it got her back into writing. She likes writing fiction and usually writes from a line prompt or even a picture.
