Once they figured out she’d run away, they’d check the bus station and the airport. They’d never guess she’d run away on her skateboard. She coasted along, leaving all the horror behind her. No more would she be cursed with the weekend battles, forced to clean up the coffee cups hurled against the wall, or be forced to take sides. If she didn’t leave, she would have no life, forced to shoulder their responsibilities. With her gone, would they get it? Would things change, the fighting end?
Once they figured out she’d run away, they’d check the bus station and the airport. They’d never guess she’d run away on her skateboard.
She was determined to get away. She had enough the the abuse she had to endure in the hands of her uncle. Her parents didn’t believe her. They followed her around the house and kept checking to see what she was doing all the time. She was sick and tired of such treatment, and she’s had enough. So, she decided that enough was enough. She grabbed her skateboard and off she went. Freedom at last. Even the air felt lighte.
Once they figured out she’d run away, they’d check the bus station and the airport. They’d never guess she’d run away on her skateboard.
She was determined to be with him. He was her soul mate. She couldn’t imagine a life without him. Once she got to his house, he would know what to do. Her parents knew about him but thought he lived miles away. Little did they know he only lived across town. They would be together soon.
Once they figured out she’d run away, they’d check the bus station and the airport. They’d never guess she’d run away on her skateboard. The wheels provided her with a freedom they always underestimated. Her mom thought it was a silly phase, her picking up the skateboard hobby like her older brother, Mark. Her mom thought everything she did was because of Mark. Frustratingly, she knew they’d all say she ran away because of Mark. Mark! Mark! Mark! Everything was about Mark. She couldn’t escape it.
Her mom used to tell embarrassing stories of how when Mark and her were little she’d peel off her shirt, run through the sprinklers and claim she was a nakie boy too! Mom didn’t tell those stories anymore. Actually mom did tell those stories, but they were no longer about her. Her part was erased from those memories, just like her current needs were no longer a priority in their household. Even in death she was competing with Mark for her families’ affection and attention.
Once my parents realize I’ve run away, they’ll check the bus station and the airport. They’ll never guess I’ve used my skateboard as my vehicle of escape. The fight mom and I had was the last straw. I may only be sixteen but I am old enough to have some say in my own life. She doesn’t understand me or the things I want. “We’ll discuss this when your father gets home.” That’s her standard response when she doesn’t want to deal with the problem. And the problem this time is her.
