Writing Spaces Can be Fun to Organize in an Attractive Way

A few years ago, my husband retired and we decided to significantly downsize our lives and therefore our writing spaces.

Plus, we left Missouri and moved to the Treasure Coast in southern Florida! Talk about writing spaces!

But now that we live in a much smaller space, I find it more important than ever to stay organized, especially where my writing is concerned.

In the old days, I had an entire room devoted to my writing and my writing business.

Now I have a small table set up in a corner of our bedroom.

But as long as I keep things organized, this space works well.

So I’ve made it fun to stay organized.

And I try to make the space inviting, so I enjoy working here.

I used to have a bigger computer, with a large monitor, but these days I do all my work from this little laptop (with protective purple cover).

I do enjoy having a separate mouse for it, though.

It makes it much easier to do my work.

And I love my little turquoise wavy mousepad.

And you can see my printer, which I keep on the chest of drawers to the left of my work table.

Above the table is my big white dry-erase board.

Right now, it is blank, but I usually use it to time block my work days, so I can tell at a glance what I should be working on at any time of the day (it helps keep me focused and on track).

I also look for colorful and attractive items to help me stay organized.

Like these peacock file folders.

If you look at the photo of my work table again you’ll notice the peacock folders on the left of the table.

I keep them handy so I can file stuff in them right away – so I don’t accumulate a bunch of loose papers on my desk.

You’ll also notice my daily/monthly planner on the front left side of the table.

I use this planner every single day to stay organized and on track.

And recently, my friend and creative partner (we work on all sorts of projects together), Wendy Dewar Hughes, showed me how to make these attractive bookmarks with large colorful paper clips and ribbon.

I use them to mark special pages in my planner.

But they also make great bookmarks – and I usually take a book out to the beach to read every afternoon, so these clips come in handy for that, too.

I also got the idea from Wendy to create some colorful envelopes from magazine pages.

This was really quick and fun to do.

All you need is a page from a magazine and some washi tape.

This one was really cool because there was a little photo on the magazine page that sort of peeks out at you when you open the envelope.

Something else I’m working on (between writing projects each day) that is a lot of fun is an art journal.

I just bought this little spiral notebook because it had a colorful cover and some nice dividers inside.

It just has regular lined pages inside. But I will cover those up with pictures, photos, or maybe even some Gesso.

Right now I’m just pasting some colorful beach photos from an old calendar onto the pages of the notebook.

I’ll post more photos of the art journal as I create it.
