Try These Story Starters…
Creative writing prompts are a great way to start a regular writing practice.
Get a new spiral notebook.
Each morning, turn to a fresh page in your notebook, choose one of the writing prompts and start writing.
Don’t worry if you don’t write a complete story every time.
Some days you might only write the opening scene to a story.
Other days, you’ll find yourself writing page after page as a story seems to write itself.
This week I have two dozen prompts for you, so you’ll have more than a week’s worth of prompts if you decide to use every one of them.
1. Martin went to his room, like his mother told him to. But he knew he wouldn’t stay in there very long.
2. Frances decided she wanted a boyfriend. And she knew exactly who she wanted.
3. Sandrine was on her way to work when the unthinkable happened.
4. As the sun set and the sky darkened, Michael noticed something emerging from the lake.

11. Sarah knew that Ben wanted to kiss her. She could see it in the way he looked at her. What she didn’t know was whether she would let him.
12. Funny how it all began with a simple suggestion. “Let’s have fun today,” said Charlie.
13. “You just can’t help some people,” said Carol. “If you try, you’ll only mess up your own life.”
14. Saturday was usually Tim’s favorite day of the week. But not this particular Saturday.
15. “Money changes everything,” he said.
16. Brian was about to be put to the test, and he knew it. But what could he do about it?
17. Tania saw something move in front of her, so close and so fast that she couldn’t tell what it was. Then everything went black.
18. She watched as his car slowly pulled away from the curb.
19. “Don’t go,” he said, as her fingers slowly slipped from his.
20. Some people are hard to love. Milo was one of those people.
21. “Where are you going?” asked Charlotte.
Bill grinned. “I’m off to see the wizard,” he said.
Charlotte frowned. “No, really.”
22. “That’ll never work!” said Bailey.
23. “Are you sure you want to do that?” asked Maggie.
24. All my life, no matter what I wanted, people have always told me, “Don’t do that!” Well, I’m sick of it. This time I’m going to do exactly what I want.
