creative writing prompts

This week’s creative writing prompts are all about returning to school after the summer.

These will be particularly fun if you’re a young student, but if you’re an adult who hasn’t been to School for some time, write from the point of view of a young person.

Back to School Creative Writing Prompts

Monday’s Prompt – The Mysterious Locker

On the first day of school, you find an old, dusty locker at the end of the hallway.

When you open it, you discover it’s a portal to a different world where school rules are reversed.

Write about your adventures in this strange school and what happens when the portal starts closing.

Tuesday’s Prompt – The New Teacher’s Secret

A new teacher arrives at your school, and something seems off.

Rumors spread that they’re not from around here—some say they’re from another time, others from another dimension.

Write a story where you uncover the truth about the new teacher’s origin.

Wednesday’s Prompt – The Class Pet with a Plan

Your class gets a new pet for the school year—a seemingly ordinary hamster.

However, you soon discover that the hamster is incredibly intelligent and has a grand plan that involves the entire school.

Write about how you and your classmates help (or hinder) the hamster’s plan.

Thursday’s Prompt – The School Time Capsule

During a school assembly, the principal announces that an old-time capsule has been discovered buried under the playground.

When it’s opened, you find an item inside that seems to be a key to an ancient mystery connected to the school’s history.

Write about what you find and where the mystery leads you.

Friday’s Prompt – The Forgotten Subject

On your first day back at school, you notice a new subject on your schedule—one that wasn’t there before.

No one else seems to see it, but you’re compelled to attend.

Write about the strange lessons you learn and the secrets of the hidden subject.

Saturday’s Prompt – The Friendship Contract

At the beginning of the school year, your best friend suggests writing a “Friendship Contract” so you both stay close all year.

However, as the days go by, you start noticing that the contract has strange, magical consequences.

Write about how you navigate the challenges that arise from this binding agreement.

Sunday’s Prompt – The Shadow in the Library

On a rainy day during the first week of school, you stay late in the library.

As you read, you notice a shadow that doesn’t seem to belong to any student or teacher.

The shadow starts moving on its own, leading you to a hidden part of the library where an ancient book holds a story that changes your life.

Write about the discovery and its impact on you.
