halloween story starters

Halloween is still a few weeks away, but use these prompts to get into the “spirit” of things right now.

These prompts should help spark a spooky story filled with Halloween magic and mystery!

Monday’s Prompt – The Haunted Keepsake

You find an old, dusty locket at a Halloween flea market.

Inside, there’s a photo of someone who looks just like you, but from a century ago.

As soon as you open it, strange things start happening in your life.

Write about what the locket contains and its connection to you.

Tuesday’s Prompt – The Witch’s Apprentice

On Halloween night, you’re approached by a mysterious old woman who claims she’s a witch, and she needs an apprentice to complete a once-in-a-lifetime spell.

But there’s a catch: the spell can only be cast at midnight on Halloween, and it involves a dangerous journey to the spirit world.

Do you agree, and what happens next?

Wednesday’s Prompt – The Mask

At a Halloween costume store, you find an ancient-looking mask that seems to be calling out to you.

When you put it on, it won’t come off, and you start seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.

Who is this other person, and what do they want from you?

Thursday’s Prompt – The Ghostly Invitation

You receive a beautifully written invitation to a Halloween party at a mansion you’ve never heard of.

When you arrive, you realize the other guests are all from different centuries.

What’s the purpose of this party, and why were you invited?

Friday’s Prompt – The Town That Disappears

Every Halloween, a mysterious town appears out of nowhere, and only those who truly believe in magic can enter.

Write about what happens when you find yourself wandering into this strange place, where time and reality bend.

Saturday’s Prompt – The Halloween Pact

As children, you and your friends made a pact to always meet on Halloween night to share your scariest stories.

Now, as adults, you’re the only one who remembers.

On Halloween night, you go to your meeting spot, but something—or someone—is waiting for you.

What do they want?

Sunday’s Prompt – The Pumpkin Carver’s Curse

In your town, there’s a legend about a pumpkin carver whose jack-o’-lanterns were said to trap the souls of those who wronged him.

One Halloween, you discover a hidden pumpkin with your name carved into it.

What happens when you try to destroy it, and how can you break the curse?
